Patch 0.4 has changed Path of Exile 2 in a way you can feel almost straight away, and a lot of players chasing smoother progression or high-end value are already paying attention to things like Fate of the Vaal HC Exalted Orb while figuring out which builds are actually worth the grind. The big story, though, is how open the endgame feels now. There are clear standouts, sure, but it's not one of those patches where only one or two setups make sense. You can blast maps, play safe, or build around bossing, and there's a real path for each. After a lot of testing, the strongest builds right now aren't just strong on paper. They feel good to play, which matters more than people admit.
Druid builds leading the pack
Druid is the class everyone's talking about, and yeah, it earns the hype. Meteor Druid feels absurd once it gets rolling. Vaalken Calamity stacks hits fast, then the meteor drops and whole packs just disappear. What makes it stand out is that it doesn't play like a fragile caster. With Bear Form and Shaman's Rage in the mix, you're tankier than you'd expect and still putting out huge damage. If that sounds a bit too gear hungry, Wolf Druid is probably the cleaner option. It comes online earlier, scales cold damage naturally, and the freeze control is a big deal in tougher content. Hellfire Wyvern Druid has that speedy mapper vibe, darting through zones with Lightning Orb Rush, while Plant Druid is more about setup and chain explosions. Then there's Minion Druid, which honestly might be the easiest build to recommend to newer players. Even with rough gear, your army does enough work to keep progression steady.
Spellcasters that actually feel great again
Outside of Druid, caster builds are in a much better spot than they were before. Essence Drain Witch is one of the safest picks if you like damage over time and a more controlled pace. ED and Contagion still spread nicely, but now the build feels less awkward in long fights because Dark Effigy Totems help carry the pressure. Soulstealer also fixes a lot of the mana pain that used to drag these builds down. Spark Sorceress is the other big winner, though it asks for more from the player. The Blood Mage version can look risky at first since you're spending life to cast, but once the crit engine is online, it clears like crazy. Dense maps become chaos in the best way. It's not the easiest starter, no, but it scales hard into proper endgame.
Ranged and melee options worth your time
Ranged players have a couple of really solid choices now. Poison Burst Ranger feels smoother than expected, and that's probably why so many people stuck with it after the first week. Toxic Growth into Poison Burst Arrow gives the build a simple flow, and boss damage ramps up fast once the poisons start stacking. Lightning Spear Amazon is more technical but very rewarding. Wind Dancer helps keep your energy shield stable, and the crit-based lightning damage tears through packs in a way that feels clean, not clunky. On the melee side, Shield Wall Warrior is still one of the funniest builds to bring into hard content. You stack armour, rotate defensive warcries, and slam enemies without really caring what's in front of you. If you like standing your ground instead of dodging every second, it's got real appeal.
Where the patch feels strongest
What makes 0.4 land so well is that different builds shine for different reasons, not because everything is pretending to be the same. Some players want fast maps. Some want a league starter that won't fall apart. Others just want a boss killer and enough resources to buy PoE 2 Currency without wasting weeks on a weak setup, which is why this patch has clicked with so many people. Right now, you can pick a style that suits how you actually play, make a few tree adjustments, and get moving.
