What It Means For Users

Hive has decided to ditch its range of non-energy based smart devices as it intends to focus on making ‘Britain’s homes more energy efficient and cheaper to run’.

Hive View cameras, Hive HomeShield and Hive Leak will all be discontinued.
While Hive smart thermostats and radiator valves will still be supported, the company will drop its security cameras and alarm systems.

Support for the Hive View indoor camera and Hive View Outdoor camera, along with the Hive Homeshield smart burglar alarm (including sirens, keypads and sensors), will end in three years time on 1 August 2025. Hive Leak sensors will end much sooner, with support ceasing on 1 September 2023.

  • Hive Leak – Support ending September 1, 2023
  • Hive View cameras – Support ending August 1, 2025
  • Hive HomeShield system – Support ending August 1, 2025

As a smart home technology brand looking to do its part in fighting climate change, Hive wants to devote more resources to new innovations that will get homes closer to net-zero energy usage. Unfortunately, that meant having to discontinue its current security-focused products.

What Does This Mean For Existing Hive Leak Users?

The hive leak detection service will operate as normal until Hive support ends on 01/09/23. After that you’ll no longer receive notifications of possible leaks. You also won’t be able to access your in-app water usage history graphs.

Hive Leak users should start exploring alternative whole-home water leak detectors for when support ends. If you’ve already installed your product, you’ll be able to use it until support ends.

Aqara Water Leak Sensor Is A Great Alternative

The Aqara Water Leak Sensor offers similar capabilities to the Hive sensor and all in a compact design:

  • Detects flooding/water leaks and can trigger alarms and push notifications to your phone
  • Long 500ft connectivity range to Aqara smart home hub
  • IP67 waterproof rating
  • Elegant and versatile design to place anywhere needed
  • Significantly more affordable

It maybe disappointing to current users, as their smart security and leak detection devices become discontinued along with some older models of the Hive Hub. Apart from that, the Hive portfolio is unaffected and they plan to launch new products in the months and years to come.

If you’re a Hive customer affected by the discontinuation of the Hive Leak Sensor, the Aqara Water Leak Sensor looks to be a seamless and budget-friendly replacement option to keep your home protected. Make the switch before Hive ends support to avoid any gap in whole-home leak detection coverage.
