‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ sweeps Oscars

The 95th Academy Awards was a night of triumphs for both Asian representation and surprise upsets. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the third time, the ceremony saw Hollywood’s biggest stars gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate the magic of moviemaking.

One of the biggest winners of the night was “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a sci-fi, comedy, and action film that features an Asian cast. The movie won seven awards of its 11 Oscar nominations., including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay for the “Daniels”, Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The film follows the story of Evelyn Wang, played by Michelle Yeoh, a Chinese immigrant who embarks on an adventure through different multiverses. Yeoh also made history by becoming the first Asian woman to win best actress at the Oscars. Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor for his comeback performance, and Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Supporting Actress.

Another historic win was Ruth E. Carter, who paid tribute to her late mother and became the first Black woman to win two Oscars for her best costume design win for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Brendan Fraser also won Best Actor for his role in “The Whale,” a heartwarming film that tells the story of a man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter.

The ceremony also featured emotional speeches, with Quan declaring that his win was “the American dream” and Yeoh encouraging viewers to “dream big.” Lady Gaga and Rihanna performed, and all of the nominees for Best Original Song performed on stage.

In a surprise upset, Sarah Polley’s win for best-adapted screenplay for “Women Talking” beat out the blockbuster film “Top Gun: Maverick.” However, Australians Cate Blanchett, Catherine Martin, Mandy Walker, and Lachlan Pendragon were among those who missed out on awards.

Overall, the 95th Academy Awards was a stunning finish to the awards season, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” cementing its place in cinematic history as a celebration of diversity and creativity.
